Why Punch Presses Use Bronze Bushings Instead of Steel

The classic question

Customers often ask why punch press crankshafts use bronze bushings rather than steel or rolling bearings.

Three reasons

  1. Protecting the crankshaft. Steel-on-steel contact wears the shaft itself — the most expensive part in the press. Bronze is the sacrificial partner: it wears instead of the shaft, and replacing a bushing is cheap and quick.
  2. Embeddability and conformability. Bronze absorbs dirt and misalignment better than steel, keeping the journal smooth and the press accurate.
  3. Cost. A precision bronze bushing costs a fraction of a matching rolling bearing assembly, especially in the large sizes presses require.
