Why Punch Presses Use Bronze Bushings Instead of Steel
The classic question
Customers often ask why punch press crankshafts use bronze bushings rather than steel or rolling bearings.
Three reasons
- Protecting the crankshaft. Steel-on-steel contact wears the shaft itself — the most expensive part in the press. Bronze is the sacrificial partner: it wears instead of the shaft, and replacing a bushing is cheap and quick.
- Embeddability and conformability. Bronze absorbs dirt and misalignment better than steel, keeping the journal smooth and the press accurate.
- Cost. A precision bronze bushing costs a fraction of a matching rolling bearing assembly, especially in the large sizes presses require.
