Bronze vs Steel for Bushing Material: An Honest Comparison
The honest numbers
Steel is harder and cheaper per kilogram. So why do designers keep specifying bronze bushings?
Where steel fails
- Shaft wear. Steel-on-steel wears the shaft, which is usually the expensive, hard-to-replace part. Bronze is the sacrificial component.
- Galling. Under marginal lubrication, steel-to-steel contact can gall and seize. Bronze's microstructure resists this.
- Corrosion. In damp, salty or chemical environments, plain steel rusts; bronze does not.
Where bronze wins on cost
A steel bushing is cheaper to buy and more expensive to own: faster shaft wear, more downtime, bigger spares inventory. Over a five-year horizon, bronze routinely wins the total-cost comparison in heavy equipment.
When steel is right
For extremely high loads with generous, reliable lubrication, hardened steel sleeves have their place — usually with a replaceable shaft liner. For everything else, bronze remains the practical default.
