Why Mining Machinery Still Runs on Bronze Bearings

A mine is a controlled demolition site. Equipment operates in abrasive dust, carries shock loads measured in tons, and is maintained in between production targets. In that environment, bronze keeps winning bearing positions that engineers replaced elsewhere years ago. The reasons are mechanical, not traditional:

1. It protects the more expensive part

Mining bearing positions are relative: the bushing is cheap, the shaft it protects is a machined, hardened, expensive assembly. Bronze is the softer material by design. Grit embeds in the bushing instead of scoring the shaft; in the worst case the bushing wears and is replaced, and the shaft survives. Steel-on-steel in the same position scores a shaft that cannot be economically saved.

2. Leaded bronze tolerates what no oil can fix

Every crusher bearing runs with contamination and marginal lubrication at some point in its life. High-leaded tin bronzes (C93200, C93700) seize reluctantly — the lead acts as a built-in solid lubricant between shaft and bore during those boundary-lubrication moments that would gall steel pairs instantly.

3. Shock loads need a forgiving material

Stone crushers do not apply load smoothly. Momentary overloads and shocks are absorbed by the bronze's ability to yield and embed rather than by brittle fracture; bronze forgives briefly what steel bearings would fret or brinell.

4. It is repairable and replaceable

A worn or damaged bronze part is straightforward to reverse-engineer and recast from the old one, with dimension confirmations done in days. And because mining runs on planned maintenance, a bronze spare in the parts box is worth more than a technically superior bearing with a four-week lead time.

Where the other materials win — and lose

Steel bearings are stronger but score shafts in dirty service. Plastics and composites are lighter and cheap, but they soften, creep and shed particles under mining loads and heat. In the highest-load, dirtiest sliding positions, bronze remains the right engineering answer — which is why our mining customers keep ordering socket liners, eccentric bushings and pivot bushings in the alloys the original designers chose.
